History of East-West Stadium
Established: 1938 | Capacity: 6000
Home to East Fairmont and Fairmont Senior High School
Previously the location of South Side Park in the 1920s, East-West Stadium was constructed in the 1930s as a New Deal WPA project and the stadium opened to county sports in 1938. At one point, seven area high schools (Barrackville, East Fairmont, Fairview, Mannington, Monongah, Rivesville and West Fairmont) used the stadium, as well as Fairmont State College. In 1969, a new track for track and field was added to the stadium. Since then, the stadium has been modified to accommodate soccer and lacrosse. In 2004, thanks to the fundraising of sports that use the facility, the natural grass was replaced with artificial turf. In 2011, a new LED scoreboard with video capabilities was added to the stadium. The stadium itself provides very limited parking but there is parking available around the stadium on the streets or at the nearby West Fairmont Middle School.
In the summer of 2004, members of the East and West Fairmont bands, football teams, soccer players and cheerleaders joined forces for a Tag Day to raise money for artificial turf at East-West Stadium. The fundraising was overseen by Butch Phillips.
By August of 2004, the turf project was well underway and would be finished in time for football season.
In 2011, a new video-enabled scoreboard was added to the stadium.
